4. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey
Even though there were countless pre-release reports that Warner Bros. didn't know what to do with A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, and that it screened poorly with test audiences, to many that simply signified that singular filmmaker Kogonada (After Yang) had made a fiercely original romantic fantasy film.
There's a lot to love here in theory - Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie play a star-crossed pair who embark on a surreal odyssey through important moments from their respective pasts.
The potential for a grand, Terry Gilliam-esque adventure speaks for itself, then, yet A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is instead an epic misfire, weighed down by its saccharine, overly melodramatic storytelling, and the jarring non-chemistry between Farrell and Robbie.
Conceptually this is a home-run, but the alchemy required to bring it to satisfying life just wasn't there - there's no joy to be had in declaring that this is instead an excessively quirky chore to sit through.
