12. How to Make a Killing
It's no secret that How to Make a Killing is heavily inspired by the classic crime comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, focused as it is on a blue collar man, Becket Redfellow (Glen Powell), murdering his way through his obnoxious relatives in order to claim the inheritance denied to him.
A modern take on the delicious concept was overflowing with potential, and between the stacked ensemble cast and rising filmmaker John Patton Ford (Emily the Criminal), it seemed like a sure-fire win.
Yet while Powell gives a solid performance and it offers intermittent amusement, Ford's film categorically fails to capitalise on the dishiness of its premise.
This feels at least a few drafts away from being a really good movie - it's disjointed and clunky throughout, and especially in its misfire of a third act.
It feels like Ford could've pushed the black comedy so much harder here, instead leaving us with an already-forgotten monument to unrealised potential.
