Though 1958's The Blob is an iconic B-movie about an alien lifeform that begins devouring everything in sight, it's not a great film overall.

Even so, many were unconvinced that the filmmaking team behind A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors - writer Frank Darabont and director Chuck Russell - could deliver a worthy new take.

And though The Blob 1988 flopped at the box office, time has been incredibly kind to it - its relentless pacing combined with mesmerisingly gross gore effects and some clever subversions of expectations make this one hell of a ride.

The remake opts to take its premise a little more seriously, and the result is one of the most genuinely nightmarish and tough-to-shake studio horrors of the era, while still offering up some welcome satire of consumer culture.

If you've seen neither Blob movie and want somewhere to start, the remake is undeniably the way to go.
