It may not rank among Joe Dante's very best films, but 1978's Piranha is nevertheless one of the better Jaws knock-offs released during its era - a campy B-movie that knows exactly what it is.

Though a risible made-for-TV remake materialised in 1995, Hollywood opted for a bigger-budget treatment in 2010, and because the new Piranha released mere months after Avatar, they decided to fully lean into the B-movie cheese by releasing it in 3D.

And yet the big surprise is that Piranha 3D is a ludicrously entertaining romp, serving up an utterly bonkers gore-fest alongside the duty-bound gratuitous nudity.

It's a film positively dripping with sleaze yet never without a wink, while the 3D piranha attack sequences make genuinely diverting use of the technology.

It helps that veteran genre craftsman Alexandre Aja is in the director's chair, mining every nugget of both suspense and silliness from this wonderfully dumb creature feature.

The less said about sequel Piranha 3DD, though, the better.
