20 Surprisingly Great Horror Movie Remakes
4. Mother's Day
Beyond simply remaking a bad horror movie, there's something to be said for remaking one that's largely flown under the radar, as is the case with the remake of 1980's infamous rape-revenge slasher Mother's Day.
It admittedly wasn't easy to expect much from this loose retelling helmed by Saw II-IV director Darren Lynn Bousman, especially as it was pretty much sent out to die with only the most minimal of marketing.
But the remake is a tight, twisted low-key horror which benefits immeasurably from a stunning central performance by the brilliant Rebecca De Mornay, ensuring the titular mother is a flagrant, icy sociopath you won't be able to take your eyes off.
Though it was received indifferently by critics and flopped at the box office - grossing less than $1 million worldwide - today it's generally held up as a taut, suspenseful home invasion flick with some memorably gnarly kills and a magnificent central villain performance.
