20 TERRIFYING Scenes In TERRIBLE Horror Movies

1. The Basement - Annabelle

Annabelle
Warner Bros.

Annabelle marked an early hard stumble for The Conjuring franchise, providing yet further proof that not all hit horror movies need a spin-off, even if both Annabelle sequels were ultimately much, much better.

The first one, however, is a bland mess of limp "scare" sequences and unintentional comedy, with only a single scene that gets close to approximating the effectiveness of original Conjuring filmmaker James Wan.

When protagonist Mia (Annabelle Wallis) is assailed by a supernatural force in her apartment's basement, she runs back to the elevator, only to find herself being supremely effed-with by the entity in question.

The lights to the entire apartment building suddenly go off, forcing Mia to run from the elevator back to her own apartment.

Of course she trips over on the way back, ensuring she gets an up-close and personal glimpse of the demonic force before reaching her safe haven.

The set-piece may be built from familiar parts, but it's also the one genuinely tense and well-crafted sequence in an otherwise deeply yawn-inducing movie.
