Upon the completion and release of The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, Clint Eastwood was dissatisfied with the end result. He felt that rather than being expansive, the film was bloated, and that Tuco was the only character that had been adequately fleshed out.

Prior to the film's production, Eastwood's relationship with Leone was already strained as the actor had grown tired of the director's exhausting and frequently unnecessary perfectionism, and his bad temper on set. By the time photography had wrapped, Eastwood called it a day and never worked with Leone again.

He even turned down the role of Harmonica in the early draft of Once Upon A Time In The West, Leone's next western epic. This finally gave Leone the chance to work with Charles Bronson after 2 initial rejections.
