20 Things You Somehow Missed In Alfred Hitchcock Movies

14. No Musical Score - The Birds

North By Northwest
Universal Pictures

Hitchcock movies are renowned for their evocative musical scores, from the famous slasher theme of Psycho to the bellowing crescendo of North by Northwest. The director frequently credited Bernard Herrmann for enhancing the mood to his many thriller films.

But when asked to work on The Birds, Hitchcock had something different in mind. Herrmann was ordered as the sound consultant of the movie rather than the composer.

In short, there’s almost no soundtrack ever played throughout The Birds, with the exception of the occasional diegetic pieces of music. The tense atmosphere was created as a result of no underscore and the stressful sound of bird noises.
