For years, and particularly in the run-up to Captain America: Civil War and subsequently Avengers: Endgame, there was a huge question hovering over the legacy of Steve Rogers’ shield. His days were seemingly numbered, so who would be the next to take the mantle?

It was always going to be between either Bucky Barnes or Sam Wilson. Both had held the shield in the comics, and both had been Steve’s loyal partners in the MCU, but only one could become the next Captain America.

Of course, we know now that Sam Wilson is the new Cap, and what a Cap he has been in his still-short tenure with the mantle, but it wasn’t always obvious. In fact, there was a theme throughout the Captain America trilogy that appeared to point to Bucky taking the shield from Steve.

Quite simply, this was the fact that Bucky had taken the shield from Steve in The First Avenger and The Winter Soldier, and of course Civil War continued the trend. This came when he and Steve were kicking Tony’s ass in Siberia, as the two bounced the vibranium weapon between them and off Iron Man's helmet like it was nothing.
