19. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
Release Date: July 30 (UK) / July 31 (US)
Why It Could Beat Fury Road: Well,
that insane trailer for one. Following the lead of the sublime Ghost Protocol, it looks like Rogue Nation will focus on practical stunt-work accented by crazy visual effects, just as George Miller did with Mad Max. After all, what other Hollywood actor would strap himself to the side of a plane and cling on for dear life while it takes off? Tom Cruise's commitment will add a ton of physicality and intensity to the scenes of peril, and it looks gorgeously shot to boot.
How Likely Is It?: 6/10. Granted, the brutality of Mad Max just won't be there, but the fifth Mission: Impossible sure is likely to serve up plenty in terms of sustained action. Don't expect tons of grit, but even so, with a kick-a** femme fatale to (possibly) measure up to Charlize Theron's Furiosa (in Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust), it'll probably be one of the summer's best blockbusters. It won't be Mad Max, though.
