20 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Need To End Their Franchises

19. American Vacation

The Franchise: The teen sex comedy series centered on Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs) and his buddies Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Oz (Chris Klein) and Stifler (Seann William Scott), which has spawned four coming-of-age (and coming-of-middle-age) movies, scoring mixed-to-positive reviews across the board and pulling in $989 million worldwide. Sequel Status: After 2012's American Reunion managed to out-gross the decade-previous sequel American Wedding (admittedly by just $3 million), a fifth movie was confirmed to be in development, with most if not all of the principal cast expected to return, as well as Reunion's writer-directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg also coming back. The release date remains set at 2015, though it'll likely slide into 2016 with no shooting date in sight. Why It Needs To Be The Last One: The series has done a fine job re-inventing itself as the characters aged, mining that nostalgia for all it's worth. That said, there's only so many milestones the characters can realistically come back for, and by the time a sixth movie rolls around, they would be old enough that their own children would be closer to their ages in the original movie. Best to duck out somewhat gracefully with a sweet final send-off. How Likely Is It?: It's all about the box office, though after this one there's a good chance the series will take a breather if not finish entirely. After all, who wants to see these guys still partying like this when they're in their 50s and 60s? It's just depressing. 5/10.
