25 Films That Intentionally Spoil Other Films
8. Pitch Perfect (2012)
Pitch Perfect was big news for a hot minute back in the 2010s, but despite several sequels and a cup song that went viral, it has failed to enter the musical canon, wilting in the shadow of Glee and being forgotten about by all the serious musical aficionados.
The film centres on all-girl college a cappella group the Bellas, who are competing to win the International Collegiate A Cappella Championship. We follow Beca Mitchell (Anna Kendrick), who is a reluctant participant and would rather become a music producer.
One of the film’s big issues is its smarmy, ironic sense of comedy. Most musicals have a certain level of self-awareness and lean into the campness of it all, but Pitch Perfect wants to have its cake and eat it by seeming too cool for school while playing by the rules.
A perfect example of this attitude arrives when Pitch Perfect thumbs its nose at other, better movies. Beca runs through spoilers to The Sixth Sense and Star Wars, before her new BF Jesse (Skylar Astin) shows her The Breakfast Club, and we are forced to actually watch the ending of that film on screen. The irony that Beca says, "I just get bored and never make it to the end," is sadly lost on either director Jason Moore or writer Kay Cannon.
