13. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

Mission Impossible Rogue Nation
Paramount Pictures

Release Date: 31st July

Ethan Hunt returns for a fifth time, bringing back Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames as well as new co-workers in Alec Baldwin and Rebecca Ferguson to face-off against a new villain in Sean Harris.

Expect lots of action set-pieces and plenty of opportunity for Tom Cruise to show off the fact that he does his own stunts as he seeks to bring down the Syndicate in one final mission. You know, unless it does loads of money.

Selling Point

It's a healthy and financially successful franchise for a reason, and despite the fact that the sequels bear little resemblance to the intrigue and complexity of the first, they're still more than entertaining enough to warrant hundreds of millions of dollars again.

Reservations

Christopher McQuarrie is definitely a good writer - The Usual Suspects and Edge Of Tomorrow proved that much - but his directorial outings have been less than great. Perhaps he'll rely on Cruise's charisma again, as he did in Jack Reacher, but the longer he does so, the less it will sell.
