14. Independence Day: Resurgence

Release Date: June 24th

Billed As: The aliens are back, and this time, they don't even care about the laws of physics. Also, Will Smith is totally dead.

Hype: 20 years after aliens invaded Earth prompting Bill Pullman to give the speech of his life and Will Smith to single-handedly punch his way to messianic status, the bad guys are back. And instead of running their gigantic, stupidly defenceless mothership with Windows 95, they've upgraded to a new weapon that picks up cities using its own gravity and dumps them back down.

Every time you read that synopsis, somewhere a scientist's head explodes.

Smith might not be back - having been killed off between the movies - but we do get a grizzled Pullman, some new blood lead by Liam Hemsworth and super-nerd Jeff Goldblum, ready to improbably save the world again. Expect massive effects, lots of action and good old fashioned popcorn movie credentials.
