Casting such an important role is challenging, especially a role as well known as Dracula. There have been so many versions of the character since his movie debut in F W Murnau's Nosferatu (1922), that it's hard to find a fresh look sympathetic to the novel yet new for the audience.

With Bela Lugosi's thick Hungarian accent imprinted on the collective popular imagination, it's no wonder that so many were considered for the auspicious part in the hunt for fresh blood. Antonio Banderas, Gabriel Byrne, Hugh Grant, Rupert Everett, Nick Cassavetes, Sting, Alan Rickman, Nicholas Cage, Ray Liotta, Colin Firth, Daniel Day-Lewis and most bizarrely, Alec Baldwin, were all considered.
