30 Horror Movie Survivors Who Probably Wished They'd Died

The criminally underrated third instalment of George A. Romero's original Living Dead Trilogy has one of those horror endings that, while presented as happy, actually gets worse and worse the more you think about it.

Day of the Dead primarily unfolds in an underground bunker occupied by some unstable soldiers and a group of scientists trying to cure the zombie plague. With tragic inevitability, relations between the two groups irretrievably break down, and the bunker is overrun by the zombies, with three of the group - scientist Sarah (Lori Cardille), radio operator Bill (Jarlath Conroy), and pilot John (Terry Alexander) - eventually escaping to a tropical island.

Well, it's great to see those three thoroughly likable characters survive, and there was also undeniable catharsis in the gruesome deaths of the villainous soldiers at the hands of the zombies, but, at the same time, any real happiness these survivors have is going to be short-lived.

The three of them on the island will be safe from zombies, but other wildlife and disease could kill them at any moment. And besides, they were doomed to an isolated existence and everyone else they knew and loved was almost certainly dead. Throughout Romero's series, the zombie plague never disappeared, with each sequel showing the world in a worse state than before, so they'd never have been able to return to a living world.
