5 Films Nominated For Razzies In 2015 That Really Aren't That Bad
3. Pan
I'd argue that the only reason Rooney Mara was nominated for a Worst Supporting Actress 'award' for Pan is because of the fact that the character she plays - Tiger Lily - is intended as a Native American character. We can probably all agree, that isn't Mara's fault. As a blockbuster movie heroine, she does fine work. Her action beats are all well-choreographed and her character is charming, engaging and feisty (as Tiger Lily should be). It's not Mara's fault that the latest big screen version of Peter Pan was whitewashed. Pan as a film also isn't bad; it has entertaining action sequences, its Neverland is a explosion of colour that exists outside of time and space (hence its anachronistic use of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit') and rather fun to witness young Peter explore. Admittedly, the fact that the film decides to go the route of Peter being some sort of "chosen one" has never felt more tired, but director Joe Wright's interesting take on the source material continues to keep things fresh and humming along nicely. Hugh Jackman is also to be commended for a freaky performance, deliciously camp and full of theatrical flair which would go amiss anywhere else but works perfectly well here - it's Neverland, after all. Just not as you've necessarily seen it before.
