5 Major Ways Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker Mirrored The Last Jedi

1. An Easy Comparison To The Original Trilogy

The most glaring similarity between both The Rise of Skywalker and The Last Jedi are the films' connection to the original trilogy.

Almost immediately, it became clear that the sequel trilogy was going to cover many of the same story beats from the original trilogy, and neither Episode 8 nor Episode 9 really strayed from that formula.

The Last Jedi was the movie in which the Empire gets the upper hand, just like in Empire Strikes Back. Luke Skywalker also essentially became the sequel trilogy's equivalent to Yoda, training Rey in the ways of the force on a remote planet just like he was.

At the same time, The Rise of Skywalker saw the heroes rally to defeat the Empire, and even the Emperor himself once again. The trilogy's biggest villain also turns on the Emperor by the final duel, effectively cementing the film as the sequel's answer to Return of the Jedi.

Let's just hope that since Disney now rehashed the original trilogy once, they choose to tread new ground for the next trilogy of Star Wars movies.
