3. Nine (2009)
A film that was more than likely made to have Winner of 9 Academy Awards stamped across its Blu-ray cover, Nine is the epitome of Oscar pandering. If theres one thing prestige filmmakers seem to love, its a precedent. With musicals like Chicago, Moulin Rouge and Dreamgirls fairing well at the awards ceremony, director Rob Marshall (who also helmed Chicago) returned to the well that had garnered him the most success thus far. This time he even armed himself with a secret weapon: Daniel Day-Lewis. Only problem? The film is abysmal. With such stellar predecessors in a genre with few releases, comparison was inevitable. From the cast, to the musical numbers, to the script, nothing came close to the musicals of the past, leaving everything feeling like nothing but a jumbled mess. This proves Mr. Lewis doesnt guarantee you an Oscar nod, no matter how much you think you deserve one.
