5 Reasons (In His Own Words) Why We Love Joss Whedon
1. "I'm working on Buffy: Deep Space Nine. It will be dark and badly received." - (Entertainment Weekly interview) There are many factors to consider when looking at why Joss Whedon has become so popular with pretty much everyone. Whether through nature or nurture, the fact he is following in the footsteps of both his father Tom Whedon, who wrote for The Golden Girls, and his grandfather John Whedon, who wrote for the Dick Van Dyke Show, is something that can't really be ignored. Perhaps the best reason he has become so successful in the realm of the fantasy genre however, as this quote suggests, is because like us he is a fan. When he talks about things, he uses analogies of the what he knows; feature films, TV shows, and comic books. He wrote Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Cabin In The Woods because he loves horror movies, but wanted to fix the things that annoyed him, as a fan. He's in charge of writing and directing The Avengers big screen adaptations, because he grew up reading them, as a fan. Thanks to his position in the film and television (and comic book) industry he may be more than just a humble fan, but "recognising someone else's power does not diminish your own". He's not just living his dream, he's living our dream, and we wish him all the success in the world. Because when it comes down to it, he's one of us.
