37. Gorr Loses His Daughter - Thor: Love & Thunder

At first, it looked like Thor: Love and Thunder was actually going to be good. It opened up with this powerful scene in which Gorr (Christian Bale) loses his daughter, Love (India Hemsworth). This devastating bereavement and his God's cruel dismissal of his plight turns Gorr into a viscious killer who has vowed to kill all Gods, and sets him up as the movie's main antagonist.

Christian Bale didn't much enjoy making the film, but he's deservedly been called the best thing in it by a country mile. That's very much the case in this opening: you really feel his grief. Taken literally, perhaps the decision to kill all Gods based on the actions of one could be seen as a bit irrational, yet viewers will forget this as Bale sells Gorr's pain so convincingly.

More than anything else, this scene was a frustrating reminder of Love and Thunder's potential to be something thought-provoking and well-told... instead of just being a cringeworthy, painfully unfunny joke, which is what it ultimately was. Nonetheless, Bale nobly did his best - if only he'd been blessed with a better movie.
