50 Huge Movie Characters That Were Completely Miscast

34. Vince Vaughn As Norman Bates - Psycho

Is there a remake that so obviously shouldn't have been made more so than 1998's Psycho? It was a shot-for-shot copy of the original, which is a certified masterpiece, but with none of the jeopardy, none of the tension, and a truly baffling casting decision.

Anthony Perkins in 1960 played the quiet, reserved, and rather unsettling Norman Bates in such a way that the reveal of the killer was still a surprise. Of course this ship had sailed for the remake in 1998, which is another reason not to bother with it, but to the surprise of nobody, Vince Vaughn simply couldn't capture what was needed for Bates.

Possibly taking the title of the film too literally, Vaughn's Bates boasted zero subtlety, zero nuance, and couldn't have been less like Anthony Perkins. He was outwardly a thug, which was not right for Norman Bates at all. Yes, something has to change in a remake, but not the entire personality of the main character, when it informs the entire message of the film.

The Bates Motel TV show understood the casting of Norman with Freddie Highmore, who was also able to capture the harmless yet disturbed vibes needed, but this was missed entirely by Vaughn.
