50 Huge Movie Characters That Were Completely Miscast
9. Beyoncé As Nala - The Lion King
From one soulless Disney remake to another now, with Jon Favreau's disappointing, almost shot-for-shot remake of The Lion King. The "live-action" version offered nothing new to either the story or the visuals, since The Jungle Book had already released three years prior.
Yes, this was the epitome of a cash grab, and you could argue that nothing solidifies that view more than the casting of Beyoncé as Nala. She is a global megastar to be sure, something that Disney were likely looking at more so than her acting ability when she put to paper to join the project.
There are similarities between this casting and that of Saleka in Trap. Of course Beyoncé was going to knock the singing aspect of the role out of the park, and the bonus of her producing the soundtrack wouldn't have been lost on the House of Ideas. But was that worth her speaking performance being so uninspired?
In fairness, she is not an actor. She may have starred in a smattering of films previously, but this very clearly isn't her day job. Particularly voice acting, which brings its own set of challenges to a performer. In something of a reverse of Russell Crowe in Les Mis, this casting choice focused too much on the singing, as well as the name and army of fans that comes with it, and not enough on the actual acting.
