Many folk horror stories, such as The Wicker Man or Kill List, depict likable characters falling into the clutches of a malevolent cult... not Ari Aster's Midsommar.

Swedish cult member Pelle (Vilhelm Blomgren) brings four Americans over to Sweden: Dani (Florence Pugh), her boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor), and his friends Mark (Will Poulter) and Josh (William Jackson Harper). Dani, the protagonist, is an immensely sympathetic character, while the other three most definitely are not.

Christian is an all-around terrible boyfriend to Dani, who fails to support her even after she suffers a devastating bereavement, while Mark and Josh are a pair of inconsiderate morons. Furthermore, all three of them behave stupidly throughout their time with the cult, failing to pick up on many warning signs and being more preoccupied with writing a thesis about the cult than with their own safety.

Inevitably, Josh and Mark's stupidity leads to them being killed by members of the cult, while Christian is ultimately sacrificed by Dani in response to his mistreatment of her. During Midsommar's infamously disturbing climax, he's stuffed inside a bear's corpse and then locked in a burning church.

For all of Midsommar's many strengths, its script needed a rewrite or two, and these three weren't very good characters. Christian was a fairly shallow, underdeveloped toxic boyfriend character, and both Mark and Josh were exasperating above all else.
