50 Infuriating Horror Movie Characters We All Secretly Wanted To Die

26. The Mist - Mrs. Carmody

In Frank Darabont's The Mist, the main antagonists would appear to be the many supernatural creatures roaming the mist that has enveloped a small town. Not so. This is one of those cases where the more dangerous villain was lurking in plain sight: Mrs Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden).

Many of the town's residents have holed up in the supermarket, and unfortunately, Mrs. Carmondy's in there, too. She's an insufferable religious zealot, the kind of person who would normally be ignored, and yet, when the townsfolk are locked up, under siege, and have no access to the emergency services, they start to succumb to paranoia, and soon they begin to listen to her. Under Carmondy's influence, the townsfolk sacrifice an innocent man to the creatures and even try to kill a little boy later on.

As both a powerful indictment of hysteria and a generally distasteful villain played to perfection by Harden, Mrs. Carmody is one of the most purely hateful horror movie villains of the 21st century. When Ollie (Toby Jones), one of the few people in the supermarket to not succumb to her influence, shoots her dead, it's a real punch-the-air moment.
