50 Infuriating Horror Movie Characters We All Secretly Wanted To Die
25. Day Of The Dead - Captain Henry Rhodes & His Men
The excellent third instalment of George A. Romero's Dead series - which has been criminally underrated in the past - takes place primarily in an underground bunker populated by some scientists and a group of soldiers led by the unstable Captain Henry Rhodes (Joseph Pilato). The scientists are trying to find a cure to the zombie pandemic; the soldiers are meant to be protecting them, but the relationship between the two groups is quickly disintegrating.
Romero described this movie as a "tragedy about how a lack of human communication causes chaos and collapse even in this small little pie slice of society", with Rhodes and his men being the primary display of this throughout the movie. Put it this way: if these guys were put in positions of power during a global crisis, everyone would be doomed.
Rhodes is a psychopathic thug who represents military power run amok to chilling effect, while his subordinates are just as awful. Even before their murderous actions later in the film, they're constantly belittling the scientists and making racist and misogynistic comments.
These guys are great horror movie villains, and they make the whole movie better, but you'll still root for the zombies nevertheless. Satisfyingly, the soldiers' actions lead to zombies invading the bunker, and they get some extremely gruesome death scenes, courtesy of Tom Savini's amazing gore effects.
