Andrew Garfield may have seen somewhat of a spike in popularity in the role of Spider-Man in recent years, and he absolutely stole the show in No Way Home, however there is no denying that The Amazing Spider-Man series was a step down from what Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire created before it.

That being said, while both movies had their flaws, 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was able to boast one of the most sickening moments any Peter Parker has had to live through on the big screen, something that resonated through to the character's return in 2021.

This was, of course, the death of Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone). While Maguire's Peter Parker had MJ (Kirsten Dunst), Garfield's had Gwen, and their chemistry together was one of the few bright spots in the franchise. Perhaps this contributed to the effect her death had on the film and on the audience watching.

Fans of the comic books knew what was coming, but even so, her fall, Peter's desperation to reach her, even his webbing seeming to go to its absolute limit in order to save her, and the sickening way the "snap" of her neck from the comics page was recreated, all added up to a tragic scene that would have made anyone recoil in horror. Whether they were expecting it or not.
