50 Movie Death Scenes That Left You TRAUMATISED
23. Chrissie - Jaws
There are some films that come and go without making too much of a memorable impact on those who watched it. Then there are those that are remembered for years as an incredible film, while a limited few manage to have an impact on the world outside of the film industry.
Jaws absolutely fell into the category of the latter upon its release in 1975. The fourth feature film to be directed by Steven Spielberg was created so masterfully that for a time, it actually had a negative impact on the beach and tourism industry.
You could argue that the entire story around a killer shark contributed to the fall in visits to the beach, as well as a spike in shark sightings, but the tone was set from the very opening moments. This is where the unrest was first sparked, as it became a genuine fear for just about anybody watching.
The scene saw Chrissie (Susan Backlinie) swimming in the dark ocean by herself before being attacked by the titular beast. Much like with the shower scene in Psycho, it's the music, and the fact that Chrissie's attacker was never seen that helped to make this so traumatic. It added a fear of the unknown to the terror of the shark attack, and had people genuinely scared to go into the water.
