50 Movie Death Scenes That Left You TRAUMATISED

42. Artax - The Neverending Story

All the Bright Places
Warner Bros.

In The Neverending Story, in order to save the mystical land of Fantasia, Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) was sent on a quest to save the Childlike Empress. Accompanying him on the journey was trusty steed Artax, though it was when they went through the Swamp of Sadness that they got separated.

Naturally, the swamp was difficult to navigate, but it wasn't the physical aspect that stopped Artax from emerging on the other side. The swamp, living up to its name, overcame Artax with feelings of sadness, and pulled him under. There was no fight in him to escape, even as Atreyu screamed at him that he loved him and that he was going to die.

It is tough viewing whether as a child or an adult, but it could have been even worse. In the book from which the film was adapted, this particular scene sees Artax literally explain how depressed he is, and how much he wants to die, as he tells Atreyu to just let him sink.
