6 Major Concerns From Ready Player One Trailer

2. Over-Reliance On Nostalgia And Easter Eggs

Ready Player One Iron Giant

Now now, 80's nostalgia may have been the primary appeal of the source novel, but in the trailer, it seems like the easter eggs and nostalgic appeals are present less because they assist the story and more because the film is trying to get everyone to go "Ooh, it's that character from that one game/movie!"

It lacks purpose and feels forced into it rather than something that serves the story.

Shots of characters like King Kong, Joker and even Tracer from Overwatch are awesome easter eggs that add to RPO's aesthetic, but they don't really add anything of substance to the film itself. Considering the sheer amount of easter eggs and background icons present in both trailers so far, it's highly unlikely that the rest of the movie won't be similar to this.

The book did something similar in that Cline would consistently name-drop random popular things from the 80's like Atari's and Pac-Man (among others), so this isn't dissimilar from the source material.

That said, the trailer's noteworthy moments feel like they're more based on the "OMG is that the Back to the Future jingle at the end?" moments, and less on actual plot details.
