6 Movie Franchises That Were Saved By A Reboot (And 6 That Were Doomed)
5. Saved: Star Trek
'This Isn't Your Dad's Star Trek'.
The tagline to JJ Abrams' 2009 reboot seemed like a peculiar way to market a franchise that had existed in some form or other since 1966, and even served to alienate some of the series' older fans as they were being told that their version of Stark Trek essentially sucked.
To be fair, on the big screen at least Star Trek had arguably never been more irrelevant than it was in the years following the release of Nemesis in 2002, with the final movie featuring The Next Generation crew ending up as the lowest-earning entry in the ten-movie and 23 year theatrical history of the Enterprise crew.
Sidestepping any potential controversy among the fans by establishing the reboot in an alternate timeline, Abrams' younger and sexier version of Star Trek wasn't exactly what many fans of the original series wanted, but served to reinvent the property as an action-heavy blockbuster sci-fi that would appeal to a much wider demographic.
And it did, with 2009's Trek scored the best reviews that the franchise had seen in decades, appealing to fans both old and new. The movie would go on to earn over $385m at the box office, over double what any previous instalment had ever managed, and sent Gene Rodenberry's creation roaring back into the public consciousness in the process.
