6 Movie Franchises That Were Saved By A Reboot (And 6 That Were Doomed)
6. Saved: Spider-Man
Despite steering the Spider-Man franchise to multi-billion dollar success over the course of three Sam Raimi movies and two by Marc Webb, Sony have never really been the greatest stewards of the iconic character. Spider-Man 3 bore all the hallmarks of studio interference, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suffered from much the same fate.
Instead of focusing on making the best Spidey movie that they could, Sony instead decided to cram as much world-building into the Andrew Garfield-led sequel as possible at the expense of the story, with the focus on potential future instalments ultimately harming the final product.
After the disappointing critical and commercial performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, any plans for The Sinister Six and other spin-offs were put on hold as Sony leased the character back to Marvel Studios in what was a stunning development at the time, with Tom Holland suiting up as the web-slinger to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War, before Homecoming launched the wall-crawler's third standalone franchise in just fifteen years.
Remarkably, this didn't stop Sony as they launched their own MCU-adjacent Spider-Verse without actually featuring Spider-Man, with Venom turning out to be a monster hit and the Jared Leto-starring Morbius currently in production. Given their track record of handling their most valuable commercial asset, Spider-Man is much better off under the stewardship of Kevin Feige than he ever was under the Sony umbrella.
