7 Actors Who Drastically Transformed Their Bodies For Forgettable Movies
2. Jared Leto - Chapter 27
When he’s not churning out radio-friendly (read: terrible) emo rock music with 30 Seconds To Mars, Jared Leto is capable of turning in some great performances as an actor. Since beginning his career in 1995 he’s made a name for himself in a number of beloved movies including The Thin Red Line and American Psycho as well as more recently earning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.
It’s unfortunate that he’s now best known for being everybody’s least favourite Joker, but this isn’t the only misstep he’s made throughout his acting career. When he appeared in Chapter 27 as John Lennon’s killer, Mark David Chapman, Leto decided that it would be best to put on a bit of weight. Being that he’s quite a lithe man usually, to ensure he looked the part Leto ended up gaining 67lbs.
The reward for this dedication? Becoming wheelchair-bound with crippling gout.
While critics praised Leto’s performance as Chapman, they simultaneously pulled apart the movie itself for not giving enough insight into the murderer’s mind and generally just being poorly put together.
What should be an interesting look at what drives a man to kill (other than an unhealthy obsession with The Catcher in the Rye, of course) ended up being a wasted opportunity.
