7 Harry Potter Moments That Are So Much Better In The Film
5. Hermione Wiping Her Parents' Minds
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows is a marked turning point in the narrative of Rowling’s Potter saga. Dumbledore is dead, the trio has left Hogwarts and they must now set off on their quest to rid the wizarding world of He Who Must Not Be Named…
The first filmic part of the story opens with a montage sequence showing Harry, Ron and Hermione as they prepare for the epic journey upon which they are about to embark, and the witch’s moment in this sequence truly stands out.
Standing behind her parents with her wand outstretched, Hermione utters the word “Obliviate.” And with that, all memory of their daughter is wiped from their minds as her image fades from the photographs adorning their family home as if Hermione Jean Granger never existed. It is a truly powerful, heart-wrenching moment that shows just how important the upcoming quest is.
In the book, however, Hermione simply explains her actions to her best friends:
““I’ve also modified my parents’ memories so that they’re convinced they’re really called Wendell and Monica Wilkins, and that their life’s ambition is to move to Australia, which they have now done. That’s to make it more difficult for Voldemort to track them down and interrogate them about me.”
Witnessing this moment first hand and seeing the emotion on Hermione’s face as she potentially looks upon her parents for the last time is far more impactful than hearing a retelling of the tale.
