7 Movie Spinoffs That Were Better Than The Original

1. Logan

Fox

The third Wolverine-focused spinoff of the main X-Men series, not only is Logan the best film in its own little trilogy, but it's the best X-Men movie ever made, and one of the best comic-book adaptations of all time, full stop.

Logan is a special movie for many reasons - the touching relationship between Charles and Logan, the explosive performance of Dafne Keen, the brutal, unflinching action, the Western-inspired score - but perhaps its biggest success is how it effectively portrays these super-powered characters as damaged, vulnerable people.

This is that rare big-budget movie that has it both ways: all the thrills and action of a blockbuster release, infused with some startlingly intense emotions. Logan is an absolute mess in this movie, drinking and staggering his way through a life that he just wants to end. But just like life, there are upsides - family dinners, small jokes - that give the characters reason to hope, even when the world is trying to kick them down.

Even seemingly unimportant moments like Logan helping Charles use the toilet serve to remind us that, yeah, these heroes are still human, and kicking ass for a living isn't as glamorous and glitzy as a lot of other spectacle movies make it look.

While it would be great to see Hugh Jackman don the claws again in the future, it would perhaps be even better if he left the character behind with this movie. There really isn't anything more to say, and it would be a shame to tarnish the heartbreaking image of Logan's makeshift grave with one final memory that may not be as impactful.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
