7 Notable Movie Plot Holes That Were Explained In Deleted Scenes

1. The Black Sleep Of Kali - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

tod_deleted_04The Plot Hole: "How does Short Round know how to free Indiana Jones from the Black Sleep of Kali? Looking at the way he brandishes Indy with that flaming torch, it's almost as if he knew what he was doing." The Deleted Scene: You know the bit I mean, right? Indy has fallen into a trance and is operating as a member of the Thuggee cult, when Short Round - Indy's kid assistant in this movie - manages to escape from being captured and locate his friend. Indy, of course, is under the Black Sleep of Kali, so he opts to whack Short Round in the face. Suddenly Shorty grabs a flaming torch and brandishes it at Indy's chest, which causes the archeologist to scream out in pain and return to his former state. Apparently fire awakens people from the Black Sleep of Kali or something. So either Shorty got really lucky with his choice of weapon here, or he knew something we didn't, right? And it's actually the latter. If you've ever seen Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, this moment just screams "what are we missing?" In a delete scene, though, which should have taken place when Short Round is chained up in the mines, the little guy witnesses a crucial event: a Thuggee guard is suddenly struck in the legs by a lava fissure that spurts up out of the ground, and - though dazed - is freed from the Black Sleep. Short Round notices, of course (what else does he have to do whilst digging in the mines of an ancient palace?), and manages to apply this extremely handy knowledge when it comes to breaking Indy out from under Mola Ram's horrific voodoo spell. Though the movie still kind of makes sense without this moment, it almost kind of doesn't. There's no existing footage of this moment, either, which is annoying, presumably because George Lucas decided to burn it for some reason. One single picture of a flaming Thuggee guard (above) exists, though. Like this article? Let us know in the comments section below.
