7 Reasons Ben Affleck Will Be The Best Movie Batman
2. His Primary Means Of Support Appears To Be Infinitely Better
Michael Caine played a great Alfred. The scene at the end of the Dark Knight Rises in front of Bruce's grave saying he'd failed him is utterly devastating, but I can't help but think that Jeremy Irons' take on Alfred Pennyworth might just make us re-assess how we view the character. Because in previous adaptations, the character of Alfred wasn't used to its fullest potential. With Irons, the suggestion seems to be that as well as being Bruce Wayne's butler, he is his confidante, and has the capability of bringing Bruce back into line when his obsession gets too much. Contrasted this with Caine's Alfred who seemed more interested with preachy and drawn out monologues full of symbolism but not much else to assist the man behind the cowl. Irons is also young enough in his look and demeanour to convincingly play a version of Alfred who not only acts as Batman's ally, but can actively assist him in his nightly fight against crime. Let it not be forgotten, that in the comics, Alfred is a skilled actor, has expert level intellect in basic sciences, and is trained in emergency medical techniques. Irons' version of the iconic butler appears to encapsulate this for the wider audience to see, and it's this take on the character that could completely revolutionise the way we see Bruce Wayne's most loyal servant.
