7 Reasons Hell Or High Water Is The Best Film Of 2016 (So Far)
4. Ben Foster Puts In A Great Performance...
Ben Foster should be more famous. He should be a household name. He should be receiving plaudits for his remarkable talent. And yet, he sits in an obscure bubble.
Not quite a 'hey, it's that guy' but not quite a place where everyone knows who he is either. It is a great shame because he puts in great performance after great performance (we don't talk about Warcraft) and is a charismatic joy to behold time and again and Hell or High Water is another one to add to the list.
Tanner Howard, the older ex-con brother, is the wild card of the two. Certainly the more 'showy' performance, Tanner is a bit of a lose canon, sometimes taking unnecessary risks to the chagrin of his younger sibling.
He has a violent streak to go with his temper and in the hands of a lesser actor the part could have been played overly sinister, but Foster maintains Tanner's likeability which is of course crucial for us to keep on rootin' for him.
Once the sh*t does inevitably hit the fan, Foster gets to lead the big shootout giving him the opportunity to unleash the sadism that's been lurking under the surface of such a likeable rogue and he hits it right between the eyes.
It's a exciting, intriguing performance. Equal parts aggressive and friendly and holds up as another damn good example of the actor's raw talent.
