7 Reasons The Guardians Of The Galaxy Shouldn't Be In Avengers: Infinity War
3. It Won't Make Sense Story-Wise
While the first Guardians Of The Galaxy did contain several ties to the wider MCU - including Thanos and the Infinity Stones - for the most part, it was a self-contained story about these characters and their lives. And, if director James Gunn is to be believed, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 will be even more standalone than its predecessor, meaning that an Avengers crossover in Infinity War may not make sense at a basic narrative level.
Gunn has stated that Thanos "isn't in this movie [Guardians 2]" and that "we're not really so much about the Infinity Stones in Guardians 2" - which removes the only two ties this franchise has to the Marvel universe. It's not even like those ties were rock-solid to begin with either; at best, they were tenuous, and didn't really impact the Avengers in any meaningful way.
Everything Gunn is telling us about his sequel points toward the Guardians forging their own path - so why would they pop up in Infinity War? With Thanos and the Infinity Stones sitting out Guardians 2 - the two things that Infinity War will be about - there isn't anything left to logically unite Star-Lord with Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
