8 Amazing 2016 Films You've Already Missed

7. Yakuza Apocalypse

Yakuza Apocalypse is the latest film by legendary (and highly controversial) Japanese director Takashi Miike. Though it was released in Japan in 2015, it didn't make its way to the UK and America until the beginning of 2016, where its release was unsurprisingly limited.

But come on - any film that falls under the “action fantasy yakuza vampire” genre is surely worth a look in, right?

It's this sheer madness that makes the film so worth checking out. Vampire mob boss Kamiura (played by Lily Franky) is feasting on the blood of the populace and turning them all into his dreary followers, establishing his reign of control.

It's then that our band of heroes shows up, which includes a witch hunter and a hilarious water demon (who is literally just a person in a flamboyant yellow-green frog costume), set on overthrowing Kamiura.

From breath-taking fight scenes to hilarious slapstick, there are nonsensical surprises at every turn, but they're handled with such dexterity and self-awareness that they work well, making for an unexpectedly satisfying experience.
