8 Big Questions About The Future Of DC Film Universe

5. How Does The Suicide Squad Factor In?

For Warner Bros to have a Suicide Squad movie so early on in the life of their cinematic universe always seemed like a weird choice. Financially, it worked, but critically, not so much - and it's hard to see how the company can use such underpowered characters when their universe is building toward a galactic threat.

It's safe to assume the Squad'll get a sequel, but what else? Are their stories intended to run tangential to the rest of the DCEU, with one not impacting the other in any meaningful way? This does seem unlikely. Batman/Flash interacting with the Squad were some of that film's highlights, and the studio knows that fans will want more.

The post-credits scene of Suicide Squad hinted at a Justice League v Suicide Squad movie, with Batman threatening to "shut it [Task Force X] down", with all the menace you'd expect. But it's far more probable that the two teams will be on the same side - after all, why would the Justice League bother fighting Harley Quinn when there's a universe-conquering monster on the horizon?

Task Force X was created to combat hostile alien threats, with Waller citing Superman as an example. It's plausible they could then be used if that example came to fruition - maybe Deadshot and co. can handle the weaker Parademons, while the League tackles evil Superman?

It's all speculation at this point, but one thing is for certain; we haven't seen the last of the Suicide Squad.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
