8 Casting Decisions That Could Ruin 2016's Biggest Movies
3. Will Smith - Suicide Squad
Will Smith has lost it. After a string of flops and ill-judged roles (and a weird insistence that he cast his son in everything) turned the world against Will Smith, he now feels like an actor strugglingly desperately for a comeback of sorts; a guy dangling on the edge of career meltdown. Suicide Squad, paired with last year's Oscar-bait picture that is Concussion, are presumably Big Willie's dual attempts to return to form - to return to the A-list. But there's something irritatingly self-conscious about the Fresh Prince's decision to make both of these films at such an obviously ailing point in his career - one for the Oscar voters, one for the comic book crowd. It doesn't quite ring true. Anyway, Suicide Squad has Smith poised as Deadshot, the leader of the titular team, an anti-hero and semi-villain. From what we've glimpsed thus far in the marketing material and the trailers, he's not convincing anyone that he's right for the part; he feels out of place in the Suicide Squad trailer, like a dad trying to hang with his teenage son and their friends. Is "cringeworthy" the right word to use here? Sure feels like it.
