Mixing science fiction and romance worked especially well for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but throwing in another character almost spoiled the concoction outright. A film about a couple that break up, erase their memories, and then fall in love again - their charming relationship and the movie's touching premise was originally supposed to run a little differently.

Filming scenes where Jim Carrey's Joel meets with an ex-girlfriend by the name of Naomi whilst seeing Clementine, the woman he wants to try again with, it instantly changes the perception of his character into something a lot less heartwarming. What can be interpreted as nervousness becomes guilt: with these scenes, he's a selfish, impulsive version of himself rather than the soft-spoken, hurting man that the film portrays him as.

Getting your brain wiped of all memories is going to be confusing, and maybe it shows that the past in inescapable. Regardless, the emotion of the movie works far better without Naomi getting involved.
