8 Fascinating Disney Movies That Were Never Made
1. Newt
Against all odds, Pixar have remained one of the most consistently fantastic animation studios for over two decades – even now, it's still managing to put out brilliant movies like Inside Out and Toy Story 3. But not everything internally at Pixar goes to plan, Newt being a prime example.
Newt was to be the feature debut of Gary Rygstrom, director of the Oscar-nominated short Lifted, scheduled for release in the summer of 2011. It was then pushed back to 2012, and subsequently replaced by Brave. The plot was to centre on the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet, forced together in an attempt to save the species from extinction.
Eventually the project was handed over to director Peter Docter, who pitched the idea for Inside Out instead. Liking Inside Out more, Newt was finally cancelled by Disney. Despite this, Newt got fairly far in development. There's a bunch of concept art floating around the internet, and several Newt-based references in other Pixar movies, including a “Newt Crossing” sign in Andy's bedroom in Toy Story 3 and a whole newt added to the Witch's potion in Brave.
