7. The Halloween Series

The first two Halloween movies tell a relatively straightforward tale; masked psycho returns to kill his sister, and she eventually kills him. Things get a little complicated from there.

Halloween 3 was supposed to launch an anthology series using the Halloween name, but its box-office failure makes it the odd man out of the series. Halloween IV and V brought Michael and Dr Loomis back from the dead and finds Michael chasing his niece Jamie. Part six reveals Michael is under the influence of a cult that requires him to kill his family, for some reason.

Jamie Lee Curtis decided to return for part seven, but since Halloween IV established Laurie died in an accident this meant parts four to six had to be ignored. The series could have ended with some dignity here since Laurie finally kills Michael, only for the next movie to horribly retcon it to her accidentally killing an innocent man.

Theres also the Rob Zombie remakes, meaning Halloween has four distinct continuities: The first two movies link with seven and eight, part three stands alone, four to six are alternate universe sequels and the Zombies movies exist in their own timeline.
