8 Hopelessly Tangled Movie Continuities

3. The Highlander Series

Highlander 3
Dimension Films

Highlander is a great high-concept premise that's rich with sequel and spin-off potential. The problem is it was made in 1986, during a time when filmmakers didnt automatically think in franchise terms. So the original movie neatly wrapped up the story and made it near impossible to make a direct sequel.

Part two tried to fix this by setting the story in the future, and revealing the now mortal Connor MacLeod is actually an alien from the Planet Zeist. Its an awkward, perplexing retcon that created giant plot holes (why did he not remember any of this in the original?), so the third film just ignores the alien thing and remakes the original.

Then the fourth film Endgame - ties together the movies and the TV show, meaning it had to ignore the second and third films to work; Connor even dies in this one, making the even of part two totally impossible.

The fifth movie seemingly ignores most of Endgame too, plus a good chunk of the TV shows continuity.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
