8 Horror Movies That Were Filmed In Total Secrecy
2. 10 Cloverfield Lane
Just two months before it debuted in cinemas, a teaser for 10 Cloverfield Lane was released, attached to the trailer for a Michael Bay-directed war film called 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
The film had been reported on for ages leading up to this, but under the codename Valencia. Star Mary Elizabeth Winstead even gave interviews about this fake film, cleverly hiding the real plot points of what she was actually working on.
"Valencia" was actually a spiritual successor to the huge found footage monster movie from 2008, Cloverfield.
In it, Winstead plays Michelle, a woman who wakes up in an underground bunker after a car crash. She then has to make a choice; does she believe the claims of her co-inhabitants that the outside world has been ravaged by a mysterious attack? Or does she risk leaving to escape her unhinged captors?
It was a brilliant misdirect from the marketing team and one that drew some serious attention to the project when it was finally revealed.
But we shouldn't have been too surprised that this movie was filmed so effectively in secret.
After all - it learned from one of the best...
