8 Huge Concerns About Hyped Upcoming Movies
3. Car 3 Looks Hilariously Melodramatic
The Cars franchise is something of the black sheep of the Pixar family. Sure, the first one wasn't panned or anything, but it wasn't particularly loved, either, except by kids, which is fair enough. The problem began when Cars 2 was made, the first Pixar film outside of Toy Story to receive a sequel. Reviews for Cars 2 were much harsher, making it the first Pixar film to garner a "rotten" certification on Rotten Tomatoes. Many cynics speculated that the only reason the film had been made was because of the sheer value of Cars-related merchandise.
When it was announced a third entry in the franchise was coming, many film fans were incredibly disappointed, speculating that the golden age of Pixar had come to an end, replaced with the inevitable drive for profit over artistic integrity. Yet animator John Lasseter insisted Cars 3 would be different, a much more "emotional" story than the franchise had tackled before. Which brings us to now, and the ridiculous Cars 3 trailer.
Sure, it looks pretty stunning, but keep in mind: this is Cars for crying out loud. Watch the trailer again next to a picture of Lightening McQueen and you'll realise just how tonally ludicrous the whole thing is. There's a reason why the trailer doesn't show any of the cars faces, because it's perfectly aware of how instantly it would shatter the po-faced tone.
Has Pixar really become the company that associates quality with "the ability to make a person cry"? Even if that's the case, demanding we watch a goofy, anthropomorphic car have a brutal accident and take it seriously is way too much. It'd be like the trailer for Toy Story 4 showing nothing but Woody's head being smashed open against a block of concrete.
