The influence of H.P Lovecraft has exploded in the last decade. His Cthulhu mythos used to be a niche creation, but now it's hard to look at any cosmic project without any Lovecraftian goodness to it. Despite this, the works of this seminal author are still largely neglected by the big screen.

Lovecraft's work is largely tough to adapt, as his stories' cosmic concepts require big budgets and flawless scripts. With that being said, some of his most popular narratives could work perfectly on film, and one such example is The Shadow Over Innsmouth.

This story follows an unnamed narrator exploring the titular seaport town and slowly uncovering their dark secrets and connections to an ancient deity. It's tense, creepy and utterly filled with frightening creatures, so it would instantly feel right in the hands of Del Toro.

The filmmaker behind Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape Of Water is a devout Lovecraft fan, which can be seen in plenty of his movies. His legendary creature design and practical effects are perfect for the style. He's already created one terrifying fish/human hybrid creature, so bringing a whole army of them to life wouldn't be out of his wheelhouse.
