8 Musicals Being Made Into Movies (And Why You Should Care)
5. Into The Woods
The Musical: Into The Woods is an acclaimed 1987 musical by Stephen Sondheim so acclaimed it snatched the Best Original Score Tony in the year of Phantom that intertwines and reinterprets beloved fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. As such, it features familiar characters such as Cinderella, the Witch, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack (of beanstalk fame) taking a fun trek into a fairy-tale realm that also explores the consequences of their wishes and their actions. Why The Movies Worth Watching: One might be wondering, and justly, why we need yet another film detailing some dark twist on a classic fairy tale, since that seems to be Hollywoods shtick as of late. The thing is, Into The Woods is a defining work of what's now a trope, and as such breathes much-needed life into it, with a lively, cleverly-wrought storyline that flits smartly in and out of our favourite storybooks pages. The movie, set to be released Christmas of this year, boasts a considerable amount of talent, with an ensemble cast including Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, and Anna Kendrick, bringing both big names and musical talent to the table. Director Rob Marshall is also well-known for his acclaimed cinematic adaptation of satirical musical Chicago, and the legendary Sondheim himself is penning an original song, a la Les Mis, for the film version. Finally, when discussing relevant experience, if anybody can pull off a fairy-tale musical movie of this scale and calibre with both gusto and acclaim, it can't really be anyone but Disney, can it?
